A romantic hotel in the heart of Brussels
Brussels, the capital of Belgium, can be a very romantic city for those who know where to stroll, which neighborhoods to visit for a drink, dinner, or a little indulgence. The Manneken Pis, located right next to the 9Hotel Sablon, is very famous, of course, and a visit to this neighborhood is always recommended, but other places are just as iconic—and sometimes even more romantic.
The 9Hotel Sablon near the Manneken Pis in Brussels
Our hotel in Brussels is just a few minutes’ walk from the famous Manneken Pis, which marks the entrance to Brussels’ Old Town and historic city center. How many times has this iconic Brussels fountain been photographed? The small statue that adorns it was created in 1388. Barely fifty centimeters tall, it depicts a cheeky little boy urinating from the top of the fountain. It is this humorous and somewhat impertinent character that has made this statue, situated in the old part of the Belgian capital between L'Étuve and Chêne, next to the Grand-Place, so popular. Throughout history, this statuette has been coveted by many armies that sought to steal it for centuries, culminating in a confirmed theft in the 17th century, so much so that the statue we see today is merely a copy. Which in no way detracts from its charm!
Discover Brussels’ Grand Place
Victor Hugo considered this square to be the most beautiful in the world. A world-famous landmark, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1988. Steeped in history and boasting remarkable beauty, it is the perfect spot for a romantic stroll.
In the 16th century, the square was the scene of several executions during the Wars of Religion. At the end of the 17th century, Louis XIV had it bombarded, leaving only a few remnants of the buildings from that era: the tower and the facade of City Hall. The houses, which were still made of wood at the time, were then rebuilt in stone by the guilds; the current Brewers’ Museum is the former guild hall.
The King’s House is also located on this charming square and is directly inspired by the building erected by Emperor Charles V. It now houses the City Museum.
A Visit to St. Michael and St. Gudula Cathedral
Standing at the crossroads of two major ancient routes—the road from Flanders to Cologne and the road from Antwerp to Mons—Brussels Cathedral was built on a hill in the 13th century, based on an 11th-century church dedicated to Saint Michael, after the relics of Saint Gudula had been transferred there. The construction of the building as a whole took more than two centuries, as the choir was built starting in 1226, while the nave and transept, which are in the Brabant Gothic style, date from the 14th and 15th centuries, and the façade, topped by two towers, from the years 1470–1485.
The cathedral’s basement houses an archaeological site where one can see the remains of the original collegiate church. The Romanesque crypt, accessible via an underground passage, contains burial sites.
But one of the most obvious tourist attractions at Brussels Cathedral is the pair of peregrine falcons that come to nest there every year; visitors can follow the incubation and hatching of the eggs via cameras installed by the city. These birds of prey also help protect the cathedral’s stonework by scaring away the pigeons they hunt. In ancient times, many cathedrals were home to peregrine falcons. This Belgian pair has thus revived an old tradition.
Visiting the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium
The Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium house more than 20,000 works of art across six museums: the Old Masters Museum, formerly known as the “Royal Museum of Ancient Art” (15th–18th centuries); the Magritte Museum; the Wiertz Museum; the Meunier Museum; the Fin de Siècle Museum; and the Museum of Modern Art (19th–20th centuries).
You can choose from your favorite periods and styles, and you can also explore the world’s largest collection of works by the surrealist painter Magritte. This museum is just a short walk from our hotel.
Taste the pralines from Brussels’ chocolatiers
For a romantic weekend in Brussels, however, cultural visits alone won’t be enough. With your senses awakened, you’ll no doubt want to discover one of the specialties that have made Brussels and Belgium’s major cities world-famous: their chocolatiers. This works out perfectly because most of them have shops on Place du Grand Sablon, not far from our hotel. You’ll only have to walk a few steps to discover hot chocolate, pralines, truffles, or macarons. Enough to delight your taste buds and gently pamper your palate!
Sample Belgian cuisine
Place Stéphanie lies off the beaten path of the major tourist attractions. Though unassuming, it is nonetheless a favorite among foodies. Several fine-dining establishments here serve Belgian specialties. In this picturesque neighborhood, you can choose between international cuisine or traditional local fare—all of the highest quality. But if you prefer a Michelin-starred restaurant, you’ll be better off heading to the city’s Grand-Place.
Stroll through the romantic Jardin du Coeur at the Van Buuren Museum
Have you had your fill of museums during your romantic getaway? The former private residence of art collectors David and Alice van Buuren, the Van Buuren Museum, displays a vast collection of Art Deco furniture and rare paintings dating from the 15th to the 20th century. Above all, it features lush gardens where you can enjoy a romantic stroll among heart-shaped hedges adorned with magnificent bright red flowers!
Strolling through the Royal Greenhouses of Laeken
During the two weeks from mid-April to the beginning of the lovely month of May, the Art Nouveau Royal Greenhouses of Laeken are open to the public, offering an unparalleled stroll amid the scents of flowers and fruit, in magnificent buildings with neoclassical glass-and-steel rotundas typical of the 19th century, designed by the famous architects Balat and Victor Horta specifically to house King Leopold II’s botanical collection.
